All employees who are members of the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System are eligible to apply for disability income payments if they meet the eligibility requirements for disability.
What constitutes a disability?
Disability under the Plan is defined as the mental or physical incapacity for the further performance of duty (the usual occupation) of a participant, provided that such disability was not the result of terrorist activity, active participation in a riot, committing or attempting to commit a felony, or an intentional self-inflicted injury.
You may apply for a
short-term benefit after one year of service in the system. At the conclusion of
short-term disability benefits, you may apply for extended short-term disability
if the disability continues to be temporary and is likely to end during the
extended period of up to 365 days. You may apply for long-term benefits if you
have five years of service and meet the qualifications for
disability.
